Information for Adult Participants

Schedules for adults are similar to those of the choristers: each day begins with breakfast and morning prayer, followed by sectional and full group rehearsals; and each evening ends with a short service of sung Compline.  After lunch, adults are free to explore the area (the Cliff Walk and the Breakers mansion are a five-minute away, and other sights are easily accessible), or participate in professional development opportunities such as composition and vocal workshops. For most adults, the day ends after Compline with socializing and shop talk on the porch at Founders Hall.

Housing

Most adults are housed in Founders Hall—a large Victorian Mansion by the firm of Peabody & Stearns located one block from the Cliff Walk—in shared college-style rooms. We always do our best to accommodate roommate requests and a few single rooms are available on a first-come-first-served basis for an additional fee. Adults between the ages of 18 and 21 are housed on the ground floor of Miley Hall. The university provides a pillow, but all participants are responsible to bring their own sheets, pillowcase, and bath towel. Fans are also highly encouraged as the dorms are not air-conditioned.

Adults are also welcome to arrange for their own accommodation in Newport at a reduced commuter registration rate (contact the registrar for details). The website Discover Newport provides suggestions for hotels and B&Bs. You are encouraged to make your reservations early as hotels tend to sell out quickly in August.

Music

Each participant must obtain her or his own packet of music and a black binder prior to arriving in Newport. Full packets can be ordered from Cliff Hill Music. Please have your music learned upon arrival.  Adults sing alto, tenor and bass with the choristers and are musical leaders as well as professional role models throughout the week. Please note that while adult sopranos are enthusiastically welcomed at the course, they will sing alto on all repertoire with the kids. There is, however, and SATB anthem each year for adults only.

Transportation

We are happy to provide shuttle transportation to and from T.F. Green Airport (PVD) and the Kingston Amtrak Station (KIN). These services are only available on the opening and closing days of the course. You can sign up for these services on the course homepage.

Meals

All meals are provided for the duration of the course. Most meals are served in the school dining hall which always offers healthy warm options as well as a sandwich bar, salad and soup bar, and dessert. Several meals take place off campus throughout the week and box lunches are provided on days when we are in transit to service locations. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated as long as we are aware of them in advance. Adults are also welcome to take advantage of any number of excellent restaurants in the area at their own expense.
